Condensation in terrariums: too much vs too little

How to read the fog on your glass and what it tells you about your terrarium's health. The good, the bad, the moldy.

The fog on your terrarium glass is a real-time health readout. Here’s how to read it.

The three patterns

1. Light morning condensation that clears by afternoon

What it means: Healthy water cycle. Water evaporates from substrate and plants, condenses on cooler glass, runs back down. Normal.

What to do: Nothing. This is the goal.

2. Heavy fog all the time, can’t see in

What it means: Too much moisture, not enough air exchange. Plants at risk of rot.

What to do:

  • Open the lid for a few hours
  • Reduce misting
  • If persistent, your jar may be too sealed (consider propping lid open slightly)

3. No condensation at all

What it means: Either very low humidity (open terrarium, dry room) OR the terrarium is too dry and needs water.

What to do:

  • Closed jar with no fog: add a tiny bit of distilled water
  • Open jar: this is normal, just mist regularly

The ideal pattern

For a closed terrarium:

  • Morning: light fog on glass
  • Midday: fog clears
  • Evening: light fog returns
  • Repeat

This is the daily cycle that shows your terrarium is functioning.

When fog becomes mold

Distinguish between fog and mold:

  • Fog: uniform mistiness, evaporates when warmed
  • Mold: patches of fuzz that stay put, often colored (white, green, black)

If you’re unsure, post a photo in the Discord.

Adjusting the cycle

If your terrarium is consistently over-foggy:

  1. Open lid for longer air exchanges
  2. Reduce water added
  3. Add springtails to consume excess moisture-molding nutrients
  4. Consider a less-sealed container

If your terrarium is consistently dry:

  1. Mist with distilled water
  2. Close the lid (if open)
  3. Move away from drafts / heating vents
